pottery barn :: mystery box challenge

I am SO excited to share today's post with you! I was recently asked by Pottery Barn (I know crazy, right!?) to participate in a fun little competition - a "Mystery Box Challenge". Along with four other bloggers also asked to participate, I received a box of Pottery Barn products to create a holiday entertainment display. It was so much fun!!!

When the box arrived, I was giddy as a little school girl! The UPS man was basically Santa Claus to me that morning. I opened, and opened, and opened.... Ornaments. LOTS of ornaments! The only rule - Use the ornaments (just some or all) in any way you like, just not on a Christmas tree. In addition to being allowed to use anything I already owned, I was also given $50 to shop for additional decor, fabric and/or food to make the display complete.

For my design concept, I had a few starting off points. I wanted to use what I either already had in my house and/or what I could find for cheap - or even better free! First, since Hurricane Sandy left us in the northeast with a windfall of tree branches, I used tree limbs as well as evergreen boughs to create an arrangement in a large urn from my front porch. Secondly, since a lot of the ornaments I received from Pottery Barn were purple and gold I decided to run with that color scheme - especially since that is the same colors I use on my main Christmas tree! Also, I knew I wanted to use my sunroom as the set-up area because nothing beats natural light when you are trying to photograph. (Speaking of the photographs, my friend Stephanie Anestis Photography took all the beautiful photos!) And lastly, you know me and my sweet tooth - I just had to incorporate some of my desserts. So, without further ado, here is my design...

I hung some of the ornaments from the branches in the urn but, I also used the Pottery Barn ornaments in three other creative ways.

1. I used color coordinated ornaments as focal points in my garland design.  In the center mirror, I used the Plum Finial Glass Ornament. Hanging from the garland are the Gold Ecelctic Beaded Spire Ornaments.

2. I transformed the Mercury Glass Ball Ornaments into standing holders - this idea can be used for both place card or food tag holders.  I used them as food tag holders. (If used as a sitting place card holder, the ornament could do double duty as a favor for guests as well.) To make, I simply used a hot glue gun to put three glue balls on the bottom to act as little gripper feet. After the glue dried, I also glued the food tag to the top of the ornament.

3. I used the Jeweled Oval Frame Ornament as a gift tag on a gift.  In addition to providing recipient and giver information for the gift, the ornament also serves as an extra little gift atop the present.

Here are some more pictures showing my holiday entertaining display...

The other bloggers participating need no introduction - they are amazing and I'm honored to be included in such great company - but just in case you don't know one or two of them, here is the list.

Chris Nease, Celebrations at Home

Okay, so go vote for your favorite design!
(Insert shameless plug here - I would love for you to vote for my design! I'll be your best friend!)

I know I was lucky to be selected to participate, but now you can be lucky, too!  All you have to do is VOTE! One lucky voter will receive their very own Pottery Barn Mystery Box. So again I say...

xmas in july :: holiday dessert table

Last December, I was asked to do a dessert display for Overseas Ministries Study Center's (OMSC) Christmas party. The event was held at their beautiful facility in New Haven, CT right in the heart of Yale University campus. Since my display was set-up in the gorgeous dining room, I used the traditional and stately decor as inspiration.

happy may day

Do you celebrate May Day? I think it is such a fun holiday for the little ones. Check out this adorable May Day umbrella basket - So easy, yet so festive!  (And since it's pouring here in Connecticut today, the theme is also perfect!)

leap day :: frog cupcakes

Happy Leap Day!

I think these frog cupcakes are perfect to spotlight today. Too cute right!? Anyone have big plans for this "extra" day? I'm playing catch-up; especially catching up on computer to-do's. I finally have the internet back!!!! It took WAY longer than it was supposed to - my love/hate relationship continues with my phone company. Anywho, I'm back up and running and will finally be able to post regularly again.

Just because I think it is so cool, I have to ask. Any readers have a leap day birthday? If so, how old are you?

fruit turkey

My youngest daughter's preschool is having an all-school Thanksgiving Feast celebration tomorrow and everyone brings something to share. We are bringing this cute (and easy!) fruit turkey. Several years ago (Nov. 2007), I torn this idea out of a Family Fun magazine. A reader, a fellow Connecticut resident, submitted the idea - so clever!

The instructions included in the magazine...
"Stabilize the melon body by cutting a shallow slice off the rind to form a flat base. Using a section of bamboo skewer, attach a Bosc pear head to the melon, as shown. Cut a cheese triangle beak and red pepper snood. Attach both, along with raisin eyes, to the head with sections of toothpick. Cut red pepper feet and set them in places. For tail feathers, skewer cheese cubes and red grapes, then insert the skewers as shown. Pin pepper side feathers in place with toothpicks."

Happy Birthday,

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday!
Please remember our current soldiers, as well as past, who have worked so hard for our freedom.

cinco de mayo :: margarita cupcakes

Margaritas (my favorite drink, by the way) are obviously synonymous with Cinco de Mayo. So what do you get when you mix my favorite drink with my favorite food group (frosting, ahem!)? Margarita cupcakes, of course! I have always wanted to try and make some, but just haven't gotten around to it. (What's the hold up, Anne!?) Anyway, check out this round-up of pretty 'rita's!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!
Now, I'm off to make a batch of margaritas - It's five o'clock somewhere, right!

green me :: pot of gold

A St. Patrick's Day series wouldn't be complete without a pot of gold!!!

(image via eighteen 25)
I love this "pot of gold" so much I'm copying it for one of my Irish friends/neighbors!  Check it out here.  (Besides, this will be a great way to give her back her jar.  She gave me a very thoughtful treat via this jar and now I'm returning the fun.  Maybe we can start a little game - The gesture jar!)

Look, Look!!  That's a donut hole for the "pot"... fantastic huh!?  I thought it was sculpted fondant or something.  Nope, even easier.  Read all about them here.  (Oh, and get ready to giggle - Kristan's a funny lady!)

And my personal favorite!  How can someone be this creative!?  Those are painted Gladware!!!!!  (Silly me, I just thought they were for storing leftovers.  I'm such an underachiever!)  Full tutorial here

green me :: rainbows

Like shamrocks, rainbows are also synonymous with St. Patrick's Day.  So for today's "green me", look at these rainbow treats.

Cupcakes - so easy to make and kids will love them!  Find the recipe and how-to here.

Treat bags - no cooking required!  Easy how-to here and free printable here.

Pudding cups - Love this!  Sophisticated whimsy, right?.  Check it out here.

Tomorrow's "green me"... what's always at the end of a rainbow?!?  Pot of Gold treasures, of course!

green me :: sweet "potatoes"

I wanted to share a few great St. Patty's Day ideas that I've seen recently so I put together a little "green me" series.  "Lucky" you!  (I just love when a holiday to conducive to cheesy puns.  I'm such a dork - I know!)  So let the shamrocks fly....

(image via Martha Stewart)

Look at these faux sweet "potoatoes" from the always amazing Martha Stewart team.  Find the recipe here.  Children will love to help make these and give them to their friends.  Notice the stamped shamrock detail on the bag - it's just a heart-shaped stamp using green ink.  Love the resourcefulness of that little trick!

independence day

Happy 4th of July everyone!

memorial day weekend

Thank you to all those who have served our great country! I would also like to especially thank both of my grandfathers for their years of service.

We will be planting in the garden, attending a parade, swimming with friends and enjoying the first weekend of summer. Have a wonderful holiday weekend everyone!

st. patty's day

Wishing you all a day full of shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold and green beer!

Since I'm always finding any excuse to eat icing, no holiday is safe. Aren't these adorable!!!!
