lucky number seven :: casino party

Glitz. Gaudy. Games.  All there is to a good casino party, right?  For my daughter's "Lucky #7" we had just that. The glorious photos are from the uber-talented Stephanie Anestis. (I, of course, forgot to take some pictures during the party, so I have none of the kids enjoying the activities. Bummer!)

To set the stage... these were the "scratch off" invitations which got the guests in the mood to try their luck!

We transformed our basement into a casino for the party by hanging money wallpaper and foil curtains. Not only did it make the party that much more festive, it also hid bumpy basement walls and the washer/dryer. We obviously wanted guests to be thinking about fun stuff in their pockets - money, not dryer lint! :) There were three game tables, the slot machine area and the food table. We also had a piñata hanging between the two playing tables. I often use piñatas because they do double duty - decoration and an activity.

The guests divided into three groups and played games at different tables- Go Fish, Piggy Piggy and Old Maid. (None of which involved gambling! Ha!) I ordered the felt tabletops online, as well as the dice card holders. Using the 7's from cheap decks of cards from the Dollar Store, I designed table signs with the game's names on printed poker chips. After we played all the games, then we busted out BINGO! It was so fun... kids are hilarious!

For another game, we made large dice from styrofoam and black dots. The plan was to play life-sized Yahtzee in the driveway, but the kids took the dice into our inflatable bounce house and were having a blast so why bother them, right!?

This corner was the "slots" area. I found the cardboard cut-out at Oriental Trading Company and couldn't pass it up since it had "7-7-7" across the middle payline. So perfect! The other "slot machine" is normally our bookshelf. I thought the 3x3 square shelves resembled a slot machine. We made signs to hang in the top and bottom paylines and for the main payline we placed the favors.  Each guest went home with two favors - dice boxes filled with various casino items and a gumball slot machine. When I found the gumball slot machines, I felt like the party was complete! :) Again, so perfect!

I decorated the top of the bookcase (ahem, I mean "slot machine") with items I already had on hand.  I made centerpieces out of leftover play money, cards and tickets attached to skewers. I put them all into a couple of buckets I had from a previous party. Add some dice stickers, coordinating ribbon and my hubby's poker chip set and you have a nice little casino display.

Along with my husband and I, we had a couple friends volunteer as dealers... On top of white shirts and black pants, we also sported green visors and arm bands. It was really fun! Since we had Stephanie there, we took the opportunity to take a fun family photo with all the props.

In addition to our dealer uniforms, I made the birthday girl her own special shirt. Since I can't sew, I used a product called Steam-A-Seam 2, which is a double stick fusible web. This allowed me to cut out a number "7" from the same fabric used in other parts of the party. (The fabric was a print of playing cards.) I added a heart (it is one of the "suits") and outlined it with red sequins. Inside the heart, I put little "7 of hearts" cards which I cut out from the fabric. We tied the side with matching ribbon, put on her fancy gold sandals and she was set!

We choose to have the party at 1:30 so we didn't have to feed everyone a meal. I just made a few snack type items; several of these I saw around the wonderful blogosphere and used since they fit perfectly into the theme... domino brownies, ham/turkey sandwiches in a checkerboard pattern and cheese slices cut into card suit shapes. I also found candy bars at the Dollar Store wrapped to look like money. In addition to trying to get something healthy on the table, I included strawberries and blackberries because they matched the color scheme. Popcorn bags topped with cards, of course equalling "7", is always a kid friendly snack.

On top of the table cloths, I used a couple pieces of the card print fabric and then outlined them with rolls of tickets.

While on a trip to NYC, I picked up a chocolate transfer sheet with a card print and used it to make these chocolate covered oreos. If you squint, you might be able to see the "7 of hearts" card!
For part of the tablescape, I made a card house. No, blowing it down - I hot glued it all together! :)

Now for my favorite part of any party... The CAKE! The cake's top tier was a "fuzzy dice" (made by using a grass piping tip). The next tier was a payline from a slot machine- 7-7-7! I added edible glitter to the numbers and love how they shimmered. And a slot machine wouldn't be complete without a pull handle. The Vegas-style sign (like on the invitation) was made out of fondant and gumpaste. The bottom tier was the "table"; complete with green felt, fondant poker chips and sugar paper printed cards.

Happy 7th Birthday, Lucky Lady!

lucky number seven invites :: casino

Today is my daughter's 7th birthday!
Happy Birthday, Ella! You bring me joy everyday!

The theme for Ella's party this year is "Lucky #7". We are having a kids casino party... lots of kid-friendly card and dice games in our future. We are "betting" on a good time! (Sorry, couldn't resist.) Here are a couple pictures of the invites. I took pictures of the process and will be doing a "scratch-off" tutorial soon.

Being her 7th birthday, we used several graphics to represent that. Notice the dice stickers on the envelope flap as well as the dice at the top of the invite; both sets equaling seven, of course!

After scratching off...
More sevens!!!

picnic party cake

I recently received the great photos from Bree's picnic birthday party. (Stephanie Anestis Photography blew me away - such talent!!!) Since there are so many pictures, I thought I'd break this up into a couple post so I don't overwhelm everyone - or lose you to, ahem, boredom!

Here is the cake.  I didn't go too crazy because I only started it the night before. Yeap, it ended up being an all-nighter. The sunflower cupcakes were chocolate and the cake was vanilla. I airbrushed the watermelon layer and was happy with how it turned out. I have to say the little ants have got to be my favorite part though. They crack me up!

sneak peek :: picnic party

This past weekend we celebrated my youngest daughter's third birthday with friends.  It was a classic picnic theme with plenty of gingham, sunflowers and ants! After many hours of hard work, we pulled it off - barely! I could not have done it without the constant support from my husband and lots of friends pitching in to make my vision a reality. I got an extremely late start on this party prep due to other jobs, so their help is what made this party happen.  Thank you, Thank you!!!

I also have to give a shout out to my friend and skilled photographer, Stephanie. She did an absolutely fabulous job capturing the event! Check out her beautiful work on her website and her blog. I can't wait to show you all the pictures, but in the meantime here is a little sneak peek of the day.

april shower cupcakes

Well, Ella's party was a lot of fun!  I'm pooped though.  With two large events in the last 10 days and a sprinkling of other little jobs too, I'm playing catch up.  So, let me catch my breath and then I'll show you some pictures.  I am so excited to see the photos my friend/photographer Kate Panza took of the party.  She is very skilled behind the lens and I know she captured some beautiful shots!

In the meantime, look at these precious rainy day cupcakes.  So cute.  So clever.  (I really thought about doing them for Ella's April Showers party - they would have been so perfect!)

april showers bring ella flowers :: rain boot centerpieces

Just another little sneak peek of my daughter's upcoming party... What goes along with rain and umbrellas? Rain boots, of course! I found these unfinished boots at Oriental Trading Company. (Only $16.99 per dozen. Love that!) I hand painted them to match our color scheme and thought you'd like to see the process. I still have one final step yet to do - spray them with high gloss spray paint to give a shine just like the real thing! These will be the centerpiece holders for all the "Ella flowers". Okay, one week to go... gotta get back to the list.

In other news, the fundraiser event I was a part of this past week was fantastic! I had a blast and really loved how my table turned out. The other vendors knocked it out of the park as well. I met so many delightful people and have such a renewed spirit of humanity right now - I'm on cloud nine! I took a few pictures that I'll share soon, but I also have shots coming from two different photographers too. (Yay! I'm sure you'll enjoy looking at those photos a lot more than mine!)

boat party

I am working on several inspiration boards right now - a few of them are new and exciting!  One that I'm working on is for a surprise 30th party and another one is for a beach themed shower. The two of them together got me reminiscing about my own hubby's surprise 30th, so I thought I'd share a few photos.

I rented a boat for a sunset cruise around the Thimble Islands here on the coast of Connecticut.  It was a lot of fun!!!  Since you have to bring everything on the boat and set-up in 30 minutes, I kept it all very simple.

A couple of details worth pointing out...

I wrapped all the utensils in blue napkins and tied with white nautical rope (which I found at a local boat shop, but you can find it at any hardware store).  I burned the ends so they wouldn't fray - just like the sailors do!

Again, for simplicity sake, I just made cupcakes with blue "waves" on top.  Then I detailed them with a little life preserver and a Swedish Fish candy.  To make the them personalized, I wrote my husband's initials (JHP) on the top and the roman numeral for 30 (XXX) on the bottom.  I made the preservers out of fondant and cut thin strips of Foot Roll-ups for the red strip detail.

An east coast boat ride wouldn't be complete without a lobster roll, right!?

And finally, I just had to include a couple pictures of the houses out on the Thimble Islands.... WOW!
